Wii would like to play!

Mon, 12 Mar 2007 21:59:35 -0700

So im thinking about taking part of my tax return and picking up a Nintendo Wii. Ever since i played with one at Steve's house, ive been wanting one. It's fun looking though the future game list and seeing things like Duck Hunt and remembering my old NES. Also it seems like it would be a great party systems, and i cant imagine how much it could be to take it over to Jame's house and play games all night. Im still amazed we can pickup the 3 minigame demo of Fusion Frenzy 2 for the Xbox 360 and play for an hour or two on just those three games. Even Melissa is interested in some of the games that are out for the Wii!

Once i get my tax return, it will be a matter of actually finding one. They are still massively popular. Current rumors are that Toys"R"Us will be getting a large shipment this weekend, Large being 12 units. James will probably buy his then, and ill wait until i get my tax return and pick one up when i can. Im guessing i can just keep calling up Sams Club and all the other local stores and catch one during the week.

Oncall Week

Fri, 15 Dec 2006 00:13:25 -0800

Dont expect to see me much online after the 18th, thats when i start my On-Call week. Basically ill be working everyday from the 18th to the 26th except for Christmas, 8am till whenever the send me home. All other times ill have my pager on me in case for some reason someone needs me (Most likely to run a generator to a Plant tech). Come the 26th i have 4 days of work then that Saturday (The 30th) i fly down to see Melissa. We should be back in town the 3rd, then i can finally relax until my next work week.

Also expect the current version of this site to go away come sometime in January. Theres simply too much damage in the comments due to spam to carry all the data over, so im going to be backing up everything for myself and starting from scratch. So if you want something off my site, consider this your last warning, im slowly going to start purging the data.

Color scheme changes ahead

Sat, 21 Oct 2006 11:02:29 -0700

When i redo this website with Drupal 5, i'm going to be changing the colors around a bit. As its been pointed out to me by various people, The solid blue and solid green tend not to go with each other. I'm still playing with ideas, so if you have suggestions please post. I'm guessing ill probably end up dropping the blue and make everything fit better, but a complete change isn't out of the question either.

I picked up my Pickaday PLUS pass for SnoFun this year. I'm still sorta disappointed that i cant seem to find my ski boots. Now im starting to wonder if i should just bite the bullet and buy a new pair now when they are cheep and on sale, or wait till i try and locate my old boots. I still have this feeling there in Toledo for some reason. I guess if i bought some new ones, i could get a pair that fit better since my old pair were just a bit too snug i think. Then if i did find the old ones, i could toss them up on Ebay and make some money back on them.

A comedy of failures this weekend

Tue, 03 Oct 2006 10:33:57 -0700

So about a week or so ago i got the itch to start playing Battlefield 2. Well around that same time, my TV Tuner card stopped working with the included software. I really didn?t get a chance to fully explore what happened until this weekend.

Turns out that a combination of Battlefield 2 and PunkBuster some how manages to write to the EEPROM of the TV Tuner card, screwing up its Vendor and Hardware IDs. There is an easy way to fix it however, there is a DOS Utility to rewrite the EEPROM with the correct information, then change the configuration of the eeprom by hardware modification so its no longer writeable. So i need to boot to dos using a bootdisk to run this utility, The kicker is, i threw out all my floppy disks during the move since most of them had not been used in years and refused to work. No biggie, ill just burn the boot image to a CDRom and boot that way, or so i thought. I screwed up the files i needed and burned 2 useless disks before getting everything right and attempting to burn a 3rd disk when unexplainably, my drive just quit burning. It seems to read fine, but whenever you try to burn, it just continually spools up, and never actually burns.

So now i have a new dual layer Lite-On DVD burner on its way from newegg. I?m a bit excited about taking the step into DVD writing since now i can finally burn the gigs of videos ive been saving off to DVDs. I think my first experiments will be with the Top Gear series. I think next chance i see a good DVD media deal ill buy some up and reburn some of my backups to be sure there still good.

2 Ideas im working on For the next revision of Rom's World

Sat, 30 Sep 2006 23:15:43 -0700

First, ive gotten an idea on using the google maps API to display wireless APs on a map. This all started because Jo had posted his results of a WarDrive on his blog, and i started thinking how cool would it be to dump that data into a map and have it persist?
After doing some research, ive fond the Gmaps API is pretty simple to implement, and the hardest part will be converting the data from netstumbler format to what Gmap wants. This is just in the planning phases right now, and probably wont be worked on until i get a laptop, since its hard to do something like this without data. My oveall goal for this project will be a personal portal page i can use while working to quickly get directions, find close APs, and maybe even maps jobs on a high level scale (Just Location and Fix Code)for my own curosity.

The second thing im thinking about now is converting the "Scratch Pad" side of my site over to some form of Drupal compatable Wiki. A personal wiki would let me organize my thoughts better i think, and allow me to make easy links between projects. I havent decided if this is going to work out or not, but its something to think about.

90 Days at TWC! And the future of Rom's World

Thu, 21 Sep 2006 21:57:08 -0700

Whelp, Today marked my 90th day at TWC. Anything special happen? Nope and I like it that way, heck, I don?t think anyone even noticed. What do I get for working 90 days? Nothing too special, but hopefully ill get my new truck next week. I got a chance to drive by and drool at the new trucks at the place they are being finished at in the Falls. They look ready to go!

I?ve come to a decision about Rom's World. I?m going to upgrade to Drupal 5.0 upon its release and with that update im starting from scratch. Expect a similar color and graphics layout, but I won?t be posting my 2 or so years of archived posts back up. I plan on making backup for personal use, but no more "Archive" section.

Here is hopin that Apple finally released the Core 2 Duo Macbook Pros on the 25th at the e Photokina Conference. Come On apple, you have tons of people ready to buy it the second its announced, just do it already!

Twas the night before WWDC

Sun, 06 Aug 2006 21:22:19 -0700

Apple keynotes were never too exciting to me, mainly since the only apple product ive ever owned is a iPod. But now that im looking at buying a Macbook Pro, im excited by what the keynote might bring. Its also pretty exciting since they are going to be unveiling leopard, and the new Mac Pros.
Since everyone is in a prediction frenzy, here is what i predict on the MBP at least:
Stat Upgrade: With the release of the Merom chips, the MBP would be ready for a new processor, Hopefully with an 8x super drive. Extra battery life would be great too.

New Case: I highly doubt the keynote will bring a fully redesigned MBP, but i bet there will be some minor changes and improvements, It would be neat if they offered a black option on the MBP

So what do i predict that you WONT see?

a Mac Tablet: The rumors ive heard is that its prototyped, but they want it to cost under $599, but its hard getting it to that pricepoint, and right now its too much of a niche product to focus on.

A 12" Mackbook Pro, or a 14" MacBook: Sorry Mike! Theres a good reason for this though, Apple has simplified there product lineup alot since the release of the Intel macs. A 12" MBP would compete with the 13" Macbooks, and the 14" MB would compete with the 15" MBP. Also it seems that apple is pushing more and more towards a widescreen format. In fact, i wouldn't be surprised if Leopard would have some wide screen optimizations.

Well, we will see how right i am tomorrow. If Jobs says the right things tomorrow, A MBP will be in my future.

In other news, After about a month and a half at TWC, i will be out on my own. It could happen as soon as Monday depending if my truck stock got pulled over the weekend. My truck was supposed to have AC, but when i went to kick on the fan, it made a loud noise and cut out so i have no fan, but from what my foreman said, no fan is a safty issue since they have to provide me with heat in the trucks, just not air, So as long as the compressor is fine, i should have AC as soon as my truck gets fixed. My truck isn't the best, but if you see Truck number 92 driving around, give me a wave I think if i can put up with the older truck, i should get one of the brand new trucks when the finally come in.

In a small website update, i think im finally going to update to the latest version of Drupal, i really like some of the new features, and ive been meaning to update for quite some time now.

My first "Bad Day" At TWC

Thu, 27 Jul 2006 20:24:13 -0700

Today was my first real "Bad" day at TWC. The tech im riding with got assigned 8 jobs, 2 per timeslot, so that means alot of work, and alot of fast work. Here are some highlights:

Having to put new connectors and rewire almost 15 outlets down in a basement of a nice house.

Running a drop over a 2 lane busy country road, My Tech ran the drop as i stopped traffic, and after it was up, i directed traffic for almost 15 min. One elderly couple completely ignored me and almost took out some oncoming traffic, and another guy almost ignored me. When he drove by he sheepishly said he couldn't see me. Yeah right man, im wearing a bright green and orange vest!

Diagnosing breakup on a cable card (man do i hate cable cards) for 3 hours only to find out that the TV needed some software updates, and that cablecards are being very problematic division wide.

Going to my first completely trashed house. Ended up being a very simple issue, but the guy had bags and bags and bags of trash all around and piles of paper and mail that came almost up to my chest. Before we walked in the guy said "I hope you don't mind a mess, im not much of a housekeeper." Understatement of the year

Seeing a whole in a coax run that was there for long that the internal braid had turned to a white powerdy dust. Water and time can do very interesting things to cable.

Whats crazy about today is that even though all of it, i kept thinking to myself "I love my job." Its problems that make it interesting and fun. Every problem has an answer somewhere, its my job to find it. Even on the worst day my rider has seen, only getting 4 jobs done before a lunch we took at 2:30, We were able to laugh and enjoy the fact that we were getting some of the worst jobs he has ever gotten.

Rabbits can Swim, and other things ive learned at TWC

Mon, 10 Jul 2006 21:21:33 -0700

1. Waterproof boots are well worth the investment *

2. Waterproof boots only work when the depth of the water your stepping into is less than the height of the boot *

3. Rabbits can Swim! *

4. Everything is in a constant state of change, from the Plant (Cable system), to day to day operations

5. Its all about the numbers AKA Signal level

6. Most cable problems are tracked down to splitters, drops, or tap issues

7. Techs get put on hold calling the dispatch number just like any other customer, even the same on hold ads play

8. When a return is "low" the return Dbmv is actually high, when the return is "High" The return dbmv is actually low!

9. the higher bands (frequency) have about 3 times as much loss over a given distance as the lower bands.

10. Its all about the numbers **

Notes:
* Denotes all things i learned within a hour and a half window today
** Denotes something that is so important it needs to be mentioned twice.

Yeah, i know, im not posting too much about my job or about the apartment, or about anything right now. Ive been too busy trying to make myself be a good employee at TWC, Hopefully in the next few weeks once trainings done and i get a bit more used to the job, i can update the blog more!

"The Power of You"

Wed, 21 Jun 2006 23:46:49 -0700

I started my employment with Time Warner Cable today with an 8 hour orientation session. Most of the class was Customer Service Reps, and I was one of two Technicians for this training session. After the orientation day, everyone reports to training for there specific field, Most start this week, but Technicians always start training for Monday. So while i planned for more "Business Casual" days, i need to dress to work, so that means a nice collared shirt and jeans until I get my uniform all setup.

Overall, I have a great feeling about TWC. Ill get a better feeling for my position on Monday when I start, but from the business side, they seemed very open and willing to work with everyone there. Everyone we met was nice and treated us like team members rather new hires or trainees. I can?t wait to get into my technician training and see what that?s like!

So in other news, I?m all moved into my apartment now, ill post some pictures soon when i get everything put away and cleaned up. So far everything is going great and the new place is pretty comfortable.

That?s all for now, but before i head off, how about a nice random NEO TWC Fact? When the Adelphia buy out goes though in August, the Northeast Ohio Division of TWC will become the 3rd largest Division of TWC, Following New York City and Los Angles.

I'm a Jim Carrey Joke!

Sat, 03 Jun 2006 00:47:22 -0700

Well, I?ve been weighing my options job wise. Of the 2 offers I have right now, I decided that the Time Warner position will work out better with everything even though it is a bit less money. It has better benefits, and it isn?t just a 6 month to a year contract like my other offer was.

So yes, I will be a Jim Carrey joke, though I promise not to attempt to kill any of you at the TWC Head End (Watch ?The Cable Guy? to get the reference). Officially though ill be an Cable Install and Repair Technician. I won?t probably talk about the job much on my blog due to some rules against talking about TWC or the cable industry while I?m employed on a blog, and I don?t want to loose a job I haven?t even started yet.

Now that I have the job decided, I get to find an apartment and get back into Kent. I start orientation on June 21st so I want to be back in kent the weekend before that, so ill be shooting for moving in the 17th-18th. Monday I?m driving to Kent in the morning to figure out where I want to live at and get that all setup. So fun times ahead for me, now I get to pull all the stuff back out of storage and move it in to a new place. Yay!

The search for a new Laptop.

Mon, 29 May 2006 23:43:18 -0700

So as I hope I get Ub3rNote back in some form, I know I need to get a new laptop before school starts. This puts a crimp in my desktop update plans though, and that plays into my laptop purchase. BlueFusion is just starting to lack the punch to play the new games at smooth frame rates. I was hoping to upgrade the processor, video card and possibly add a second display on BlueFusion, but if get this laptop, chances are BlueFusion will just stay as it is, and eventually later on ill build a totally new computer.

So On the laptop front; I?m a bit disappointed to say I might not get a TabletPC again. The TC1100, while cheaper now, had enough little annoyances to make me not want to get another one, Along with that whole service issue I don?t want to get into again. Frankly, the major reason why I don?t think another tablet is in my future is two fold. One is that many of the new tablets don?t have the features, like a separate video card, like I want. Secondly I don?t think ill have too much of a use of a Tablet outside of college.

So what am I looking at? In order of chance of purchase:
1. MacBook Pro
2. Asus R1F TabletPC
3. any TabletPC
4. an Ultraportable laptop

The macbook pro has really impressed me lately, especially as I read more about it. It?s a bit scary that it gets better 3dmark 2k5 scores than my desktop. I could defiantly put it to some good use with BootCamp (Dualboot XP/OSX). What I?m still concerned about is the heat and whine issues I keep reading about. Hopefully these will be solved soon, and maybe at WWDC in August there will be an update to the MBP Since it will be around the 6 month upgrade window. At least by then, the major bugs will be worked out of the platform.

During my research on the MBP, I heard about an asus TabletPC, the R1F. Asus has been getting some good press on there Laptop line, and from the pictures I?ve seen it looks like a good unit. There isn?t a full spec list yet since it JUST passed FCC Approval, and probably won?t be out till mid July ? August. Most people assume it will have some form of separate video card because its from Asus, but until they release some more details, its still up in the air.

I still haven?t found a good TabletPC or Ultra portable computer that has some decent specs. Usually to get them to a comparable level with a MBP, they either end up costing the same or more than a MBP. I keep looking, but I really want to avoid the Intel graphics cards, and it seems that most laptops now come with them. Plus I have to avoid HP for obvious reasons, and I would prefer to get a discount on it, and Kent only has agreements with Apple, Dell, and Gateway.

I will keep chronicling my search here. If you have any comments about anything, please post, since I value the opinions of my friends.

Ub3rNote: MIA/KIA ?

Mon, 29 May 2006 00:42:12 -0700

Well, I?ve been pretty busy the past few months, hence the lack of updates. To make a long story short, I?m back in Toledo as I search for jobs. I got some good prospects, and I got some interviews next week that I?m pretty excited about. Hopefully one of them will net a good job and I can move back to Kent soon.

So what?s with the name of this post? Well, last week, I had an interview at TWC in Akron for a job. I drove up a day early and stayed in a hotel room, and decided to go to Swenson?s with Jo. Well, before we went to eat I was using his wifi. When I walked out to the Wrangler I had to put something in the back and put my tablet on the roof. Well, I forgot I had put it up there, and we drove away. Somewhere between Jo?s house and Swensons is my Tablet.

I?ve done all the things I can, called all the police departments, put an ad out in the akron beacon journal, and contacted all the local computer repair shops. Will it turn up? Who knows? To be honest, I don?t hold much hope. At this point, it will have fallen 7? onto the road, and its possibly been hit or ran over, and if didn?t get picked up, it had 2 rain storms rain on it. Sure it?s in a neoprene case, but even that case won?t protect it from all the elements.

So as I hope that in some way ill get it back, in the back of my head I know I don?t have much hope. Chances are ill be buying a new laptop before classes start again. Yes I have been thinking about what I might want to buy, but ill save that for another post.

Roms World Updates Soon

Wed, 01 Feb 2006 23:05:58 -0800

So the release of Drupal 4.7 is coming soon. So I?m going to be doing some housekeeping tasks around here. Biggest change for me personally will be updating this theme to stay current with changes in drupal. Currently the theme is a hacked version of a very simplistic theme called "Interlaced". I?m going to move to a theme engine called "PHPTemplate" which means ill be completely rewriting the theme of this site. So what does this mean to you? Chances are nothing; maybe a cleaner overall look and feel to my site. I?m also thinking about redoing the background of my logo, changing or dropping the hex pattern. Any suggestions?

Also since 4.7 is finally going to be released, im going to be starting Magpie RSS project again.

In other news, The robot is coming along great, Were hoping to shoot some teaser video on Friday. Ill try and get some pictures and have the teaser up next week.

Daily Kent Stater, how much more could they screw up?

Tue, 17 Jan 2006 19:35:56 -0800

ResNet has always had a bit of a problem with the Daily Kent Stater. They never seem to get it right, ever! Although, I?ve never seen them screw up THIS badly:
Daily Kent Stater - Spyware Enforcement Abolished

Ill give you a second to read that. Now lets count how many things they get wrong:
1. Title, How can we abolish something we don?t even have a rule for?
2. Paragraph 2, We never required that students installed a spyware protection package, and CCA Is only used to require a virus scanner and windows updates.
3. Paragraph 3, We never sent out an email saying we would require certain spyware scanners, Only a certain virus scanner.
4. Paragraph 4, We received a handful of complaints about our virus scanner requirement, but never received a single complaint about our non existent spyware protection requirement policy. Furthermore, we are actually STARTING a Spyware protection requirement this semester!
5. Paragraph 5, This doesn?t sound like Greg to me, but its possible, However we are not abolishing any requirements, we simply added the spyware requirement, and allowed the students to use any virus scanner package in addition to mcafee.
6. Paragraph 6, Never enforced anti-spyware, What the heck are "Virus-Patches"? Yes she gets something right! We do use CCA to enforce that stuff!
7. Paragraph 7, The university offers Mcafee VIRUS Scanner, there is an anti spyware package that you can get, but we are currently are not using it. And why the heck is "unprotected" in quotes? Unprotected is unprotected!
8. Paragraph 8, Wow, she got something right again!
9. Paragraph 9, ooo she?s on a roll now...
10. Paragraph 10, RIGHT INTO A BRICK WALL! Trojans and Pish attempts collect this kind of information, not spyware. Most spyware looks at what you do with your computer, where you go, and annoys you with ads.
11. Paragraph 11, Yep, she is correct here
12. Paragraph....er sentence 12, Why would you avoid it in the first place?
13. Paragraph 13, Not much to screw up, but ill give this one to her
14. Paragraph 14 and 15, Nothing wrong with the writer here, but good luck with that spyware ridden computer!

Ok so lets look at the count: 9 Wrong paragraphs or statements, 4 Wrong paragraphs or statements, and the last 3 paragraphs really don?t count for anything.

Pretty amazing huh? 9 major errors. Now why am i being so critical on this article? Well simply this was written by the Technology Reporter. One would assume that A tech reporter would know about Tech. But lets take this to another level, how many other people looked at this article? How many editors or managers? Someone had to have thought "Wow something doesn?t sound right here." This also makes me wonder what else is wrong in the paper!

But why be critical at all? This reflects very poorly on ResNet, since most users will read this and get very confused about what we are enforcing and not enforcing. Essentially this article probably means we will get another few dozen calls meaning more work on an already busy week! Thanks Daily Kent Stater.

Bailing Wire and Duct Tape

Thu, 12 Jan 2006 23:57:47 -0800

It seems more and more likely that Bluefusion will be held together by the above soon.

My desktop seems to be slowly spreading itself over the corner of my room. It started when Mike broke the key switch to turn it on and restart it, so i had to yank out the front panel and pull out the switch.

Today i went downstairs and made a snack, came back up to find it rebooting and making a loud clicking noise, figuring the worst i start going though troubleshooting steps. I found out that my primary hard drive died, hard. No idea why it happened, but it was unrecoverable. The second hard drive seems fine, i tested it twice, so its going to become primary for now.

I checked the warranty on the drive that died, it ended about 8 months ago! :( I wasn?t too mad, stuff like this happens, nothing major data wise was lost, so nothing to worry about. Problem is, i went to go start reformatting the computer and reinstalling windows on the now primary drive. I find that i left my USB CD-RW drive in North Royalton on Tuesday, so i had to use Mikes computer to burn my install disk. Then when i go to install the network card drivers, it just does not want to work. i wasted about an hour and a half getting that to work and just ended up getting flustered. So im going to start fresh tomorrow night after robotics in an attempt to get that system back together.

Hopefully tomorrow will go better! my goals are to find some nice but cheep shoes, get the robot camera working right, and come home and get blue fusion back on its feet.

Crash 4

This is where I was sitting at. I had no injuries. The glass was taken out by some sort of branch or small tree trunk. I dunno when the seat back broke.

Another funny note: All the doors could still open using the door handle, The trunk opened about half way. After the accident I couldn?t get out my door, I figured it was too damaged; Found out later the door was still locked!

This is the worst of the damage to the front end of the car. I think the tire got pulled off due to the small trees we took out before we hit the big tree.

Email Change

Mon, 26 Dec 2005 23:16:04 -0800

FYI to everyone:
will be going away soon. My parents are getting rid of roadrunner back at home soon. Ive been watching that address for a few weeks seeing what was important or not and so far nothing has been.

Best way to contact me is still my kent address (rkosbab~kent~edu) or my primary website address (rick~rombus~us). Eventually I want to move most everything to rick~rombus~us or my google address (rombus~google~com)depending on if site5 gets the new cool looking web-interface to email setup.

So in short: emails to me should go to rkosbab~kent~edu, rick~rombus~us, or rombus~gmail~com. Replace the ~ with the appropriate chaciter.

More on my trip and other things tomorrow hopefully, im having a great time!

No Rombus.net for me

Wed, 07 Dec 2005 12:10:24 -0800

I?ve been watching rombus.net for a while, there was no site on it for the longest time, and it was set to expire December 3rd. Well looks like the guy renewed it, so now it doesn?t expire till next year.

Ah well, at least I still have Rombus.us!

Remider: BMBW opens Friday at 3:30 barring some freak heat blast that melts all the snow they have been making.

The weather is toying with me!

Thu, 01 Dec 2005 17:26:16 -0800

Admittedly, I?m really dying to go out and skiboard. I want to see how its different with my own equipment. That being said. COME ON WEATHER, cooperate and put some nice snow down! Thanksgiving was a great start, but the 60s this week melted the snow we got. Unfortunately barring some blizzard between now and Sunday, BMBW probably wont open.

There is talk of a Seven Springs trip next weekend if Brandywine Boston Mills doesn?t open next week. Yes yes I know its finals the week after next weekend. I luck out though since i have no major exams on Monday, my only exam that day is 8pm. I?ve already started to study for finals in classes like Chemistry and Stats. That way I wont be cramming for these tests. I?m hoping a Sunday trip to Seven springs gives me a chance to relax and clear my head for the final push during finals. Right now its looking like its going to be Will, Jo and I making the trip up there. Also I think lift tickets will be cheep since its still "Early Winter" rates.

Found out that the rotor i delivered to Rotordoctor during thanksgiving ended up being a HAM-M and not a HAM-4 like Rick Nemer though. Mean anything to you? Yeah didn?t mean anything to me either, But apparently the HAM-M is old and not worth repair. So this means unless the weather is bad, I?m going to help Nate take down the HAM-4 and an old 2m antenna off the HF tower on Saturday, should be fun!

In website news, I?m working on adding a local frequencies page. To start off with it will be BMBW and Seven Springs radio frequencies and some general radio info. Also check out the new date and time up in the upper right corner. I really like it and I?m going to try and improve some other things that are bugging me about the site.

Here are some bugs that i need to take care of soon:
1. Blog link no longer shows categories, due to change in back end categories
2. Fix Link for Ctrl-Alt-Del to correct "Comic" link
3. Add FCC ULS Link to Links

OK OK I give! AJAX is cool

Sun, 27 Nov 2005 12:19:42 -0800

AJAX is one of those newfangled ways to make websites. From what i understand it uses Javascript and XML to effect how people access the site. I?m to the point now where I gloss over everything in Digg.com that has "AJAX" In the title. However, a look at Zimbra changed my mind about AJAX. Its a web PIM with a nice looking cal system and email system. Then I got to thinking how cool would it be to store all my email, contacts, and calendar online. Rather than my schedule and email being tablet centered, it would be web centered. Stuff like my GoBinder (Class notes) would still reside on the tablet, but the built-in schedule for gobinder would be synced with my web schedule.
To take this to another level, i want to be able to integrate something that has my calender on my homepage, so i wouldn?t have to log into anything to glance at something. Even cooler is if that calendar could have different levels of security, so while i may put my class schedule into it, any anonymous user could only see that i was in class rather than where im exactly at.

Unfortunately Zimbra requires quite a unique setup to use, but Site5 is looking at implementing it. Should be interesting to see what happens.

Apparently in drupal 5.7 there will be some AJAX Built into the core. This gives me a good excuse to slow work on magpie rss, since i really dont want to write it once then have to rewrite it once 5.7 comes down the pipe.

In a moment of "DUH" last night, i decided i want the current time/date on my site. I?m going to probably toss it up there in that blue bar right aligned. I?m also thinking about switching to DD-WRT on the router. Jo did it to his and has me drooling over some of the cooler features, like being able to see bandwidth usage on a per ip basis and being able to WOL computers. Granted, last time I tried to update firmware, it bricked the router. Granted, that issue started when linksys' own firmware failed. Maybe it will work better with the v3 router I have now.

What's coming down the pipe

Sun, 13 Nov 2005 01:01:41 -0800

Well, since Rom's World wont be moving to any other bogging or content management systems, im going to be doing a custom module or two to improve some things I don?t like in drupal.

First project is modularize Mike's Magpie RSS feeds. This would be built as a replacement to drupals built in "News Aggregator". Drupal system is limited to what i consider "time based" feeds, meaning each post is sorted by time posted. Mike's version of magpie sorts by person. Here is an example of Mike's system: http://merkur.aphelionsites.net/friends.php

Hopefully by modulating this, I can add some usability to it, and the ability to easily add feeds and whatnot. Hopefully this won?t take long to add, but I?m not holding my breath since this would be my first attempt at a module.

TC1100 Working again

Wed, 09 Nov 2005 23:57:47 -0800

Finally got my TC1100 in fully working order. Its great to finally be back to a semi-organized state.

Quakecon Video update: I would say I?m 25% done with the highlights video and 0% done with the Bloopers video. Why two videos? Well, I wanted to try my hand at something semi serious looking, and one where I can have fun with the 3 hours of stupid we caught on tape. Mike went for a more of a video log.

If there is any interest, ill post a write-up on how I do my video editing.

I worked backwards on the highlights reel; The credits are complete except for final tweaking. I got a good plan on what I want to do for the next part. I need to find some good music to bring it all together.

I had a pretty interesting idea if we go to quakecon next year. I want to setup a webcam in the car and connect it up to a laptop and have it take a picture every X number of seconds. While this may seem silly to some, it adds a sense of time that is lacking out of the current video during the travel sequences. I?m going to run a test this weekend. Any suggestions for some good Webcam software? Preferably something that automatically makes a AVI file!

Website Update: Moving Rom's World to Joomla probably wont happen for now. This is because I?m lazy and Drupal isn?t all THAT bad. So that means more content soon maybe!

TC1100 still dead for now.

Mon, 07 Nov 2005 14:08:00 -0800

So the issues that caused me to format in the first place three weeks ago were the first signs that the hard drive was dieing. I kind of knew it, even before i started testing the hd itself. Well, finally this weekend the drive died. Testing revealed bad sectors, and the quick test failed.
Well fearing the worst, i called HP today expecting to get laughed at and being told "You have no warranty". Well surprisingly, i now have a new HD in the mail and should get here tomorrow. I have to send the old one back, but that?s no biggie.

If all goes well with this swap, it will restore a tiny bit of confidence in hp with me. But not much!

Stalled Development/New laptop build

Tue, 25 Oct 2005 16:36:07 -0700

So i wanted to keep working on Joomla and Mambo, but then my laptop started acting up. So I?ve spent the past week working on playing with some new ideas to improve how useful my tablet is. Here is a list or changes I wanted to make with the outcome of my testing:

Switch from explorer to Blackbox for Windows as a shell: Nope
Basically I realized that even though explorer is a resource hog, I couldn?t really get myself into using blackbox, I can keep my interface clean enough by using another skin

Switch from Trillian to Gaim: Nope
Gaim would have been good if i went to blackbox, but since I decided to stick with standard windows shell, i decided to stick with trillian. Also I found out that trillian uses less memory than gaim.

Use YZdock to clean up my desktop: Yes
Im going to be putting my most used programs in YZdock and get rid of the quick launch bar on the taskbar.

Split HD for data and programs: Yes
i have 40GB of space, and I?m going to be doing a 30-10 split between a program partition and a data partition. This way if I have some problem with my windows install, I don?t have to pull all my data off my laptop to reformat.

New icons and skins: Yes/No
Im going to continue using royal insperati, but im going back to the light bulb background, Also I hacked the Trillian skin for my theme to make it much nicer looking and useful. I dunno what icon set ill be using yet.

After i get my laptop back on its feet, I?m going to go though all my music and clean out all the junk i have.

In other news, I?m going to start programming for my new G15 keyboard soon, ill post the results of my first programs. Also tomorrow my skiboard boots come. Yay! Snofun it?s going to rock this year!

One last note: Last week i changed the Sports section to SnoFun since that?s all i ever used it for.

KSU Amature Radio Club?

Thu, 13 Oct 2005 13:19:41 -0700

So i just got done talking with the SME Advisor today. Towards the end of the meeting we started talking about amateur radio and whatnot, and then we got onto putting a small radio rig or repeater of some sort on campus. He is going to start looking into the KSU interest side while ill start looking in the hardware and student interest. We want to use it to drum up interest in IEEE and maybe tie armature radio in with IEEE and SME.

Could this be a start of KSU ARC? Who knows, but it may be an interesting project!

Designers block?

Tue, 11 Oct 2005 12:49:28 -0700

So I?m going though a bit of what I would call writers block for web design. I can?t figure out how I want to layout my sections and what to put on the primary page for each section. I don?t want to turn into every other website that describes each section with something like "Welcome to the Section, here we discuss " But i dont want to just have links with no description.

Admittedly, I?m having very mixed feelings about staying with Drupal. I like how I got everything setup now, but there are just some underlying issues with drupal itself that have always rubbed me wrong. I?m playing around with Mambo on http://OMGHosting.net and its neat, but there is so much stuff there its hard to jump into it like i did with drupal. Hopefully i can cut it down and make it useable.

Electronics Fun

Fri, 30 Sep 2005 10:09:26 -0700

So project: F.O.X. isn?t as dead as thought it was. Soon im going to get a worklog and what not going for it.

Its funny how my ideas work sometimes. Ill start to work an idea and get to a point where i get frustrated since I cant find the solution or chip I need to fix the issue I run into. So I toss it in the back of my mind. Down the road ill find the solution or chip I need randomly and go "Darn, its that easy?!"

Its happened to me twice so far this week.

So i get to wake up damn early tomorrow and work the Akron Marathon with about 40-50 other HAMs. Should be interesting, ill take my camera and post some pics.

Yeah, this post was mainly to see if Krhainos' (Jo) LJ account grabs this correctly and puts it in the right order on his blog.

Oh and one more thing: No DHTML menu for now, No module for it for Drupal. Sorry Mike your just going to have to click for now!

Notes for me:
Link page is not working in IE 6? looks like its not reading right alignment. ~Fixed: IE reqires specific left align assignment 10/2/05
